Independence(?) Day

Hey! It’s the Fourth of July! And I’m a piccolo player! So, excuse me but there is one thing that I absolutely must do..

Images of African American soldiers courtesy of Pinterest. Honoring African American soldiers from the Revolutionary War to today who fought for liberty and justice they never received.

I invite you to listen to the words of Frederick Douglass from 1852 on “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Consider how these words are still relevant today. Full text of the speech appears to be available here.

Have a safe and “distanced” weekend, everyone. You can celebrate at home by watching a video on the Newport Symphony website this evening, starting at 7pm Pacific.
